Okay, so I finally managed to see a movie in the cinema - I picked Star Trek, Into Darkness.

Anyway, I liked the original Star Trek series - what little I've seen of it, but I don't fangirl over it the way I do Stargate (which raised me) or Sanctuary (fanfic heaven) or even the new HBO offerings. Still, it was always good for a bit of light entertainment on a rainy day and I do admire the premiss of it as an exploring show.

These new movies - I adore them. I really do. In so many ways they remind me of the spirit of Stargate - the adventure of humans in the galaxy, running around space for no other reason than to explore. It is the theme I love most about the human race and JJ really indulges us in stunning graphics (never too much - just perfectly picked, lingering long enough, with a bit of epic scoring to make believe we're on other worlds with him).

It honestly feels like they've picked the themes and hearts of the characters from the series and bundled it into a true, stand alone series of movies.

This sequel was, in my opinion, better than the first one - which is frakking impressive.

Benerdict Cumberpatch is a villain - and damn does he do it well. I know there's a whole random rant in the tv series followers about exactly WHO he's playing but really, he is one of the best portrayals of action/scifi baddies that I've seen in a long while. He moves you, he confuses you and you genuinely can't tell what he's up to. i also like that it is a battle of wits rather than all out space war. He's basically an evil version of Sherlock with a starship to playwith.

I won't say much more except that i'm very tempted to go and see it in 3D as well.

Yay, finally a movie worth waiting for.

9 1/2 out of 10

It's not Gladiator or Moulin Rouge but it is at the freaking top of movies and well worth a look.
Feeling...: nerdynerdy

Agree! I just saw it last week and I swear, I think the people around me were sick and tired of me nearly squealing the whole time! Whovian, so I cheered when I saw Mickey! And of course, that first close of up Cumberbatch... GAH!

My son and I made a point to watch the episode Space Seed from the original tv series (he had never seen it before) and we'd already seen Wrath of Khan, so it was interesting the twists they incorporated into this new movie.

Completely with you on Cumberbatch's portrayal - he may be very, very pretty to look at, but damn, the man can act! LOVED his impassioned speech about his family and where he told Marcus he should've let him sleep. Brilliant!

I still don't buy the Uhura/Spock ship, but I really loved when she started speaking Klingon! Zachary's Spock was wonderful! I kept getting Sherlock vibes from his characterization... which makes sense if he was paling around with Benedict. It's funny, watching Kirk and Spock, it was like watching Sherlock and John... just in space. ;)

My total head canon is this: Sherlock became Khan, and all those tubes held John, Mrs. Hudson, Mycroft, Lestrade, Molly, etc. Mwhahaha

Awesome movie. Like you, I might see it in 3D!
