A question directed at LJ designers...
Is there any point customizing our friend's page in code anymore?

LJ seems determined to completely take away our ability to customise the look and feel of our flist. It takes ages to code the flist but now - well, all we have left is the home page, calendar and if you're lucky the entries themselves (for those of you still on a paid account).

I still find dreamwidth ugly as hell and LJ is my home - it's where so many years of my memories are that even though it's becoming a bit of a ghost town, I don't want to leave it. Still, they're chipping away at our ability to control the look and feel of our journals and frankly i won't be looking at my flist if it's the ugly block of text. As a designer I find it very disheartening.

Also - I hate that I can't preview my mood theme when posting. WTF is that?

I don't have a clue what you can do to change things since I can barely handle the coding for my LJ. That's why it never changes btw.

I hate the horrible changes being made to LJ. I don't get how the people that run LJ can think these changes are for the better. As you said this place is a ghost town. I don't think I'll ever leave either as I have good friends here. It's just dishearting:(

Yeah - and most of their changes are annoying but not absolutely imperative to my life. The flist - well, that is going to seriously impact on the way i use LJ. I'd rather have a list of bookmarks to my friends and click on them one by one rather than browse the new fugly flist :*(

Oh, I am SO with you here on everything you're saying.

Ya know, every time any site like LJ updates its interface, I avoid reading posts for a week or two because I know there will be a wild flood of hate and negativity, even if overall the update brings more positives than negatives to the site. People just jump on the negative from any kind of change and that squicks me, so I always try to be really openminded about changes and not quickly complain.

HOWEVER this recent change just has SO many negatives for me and I don't see where the advantages are. What I actually see happening is the disturbing trend throughout the internet of trying to make everything look and function like Facebook -- when I have long hated Facebook because it is the ugliest and most poorly designed and least customizable place on the whole internet. So, why it is becoming the standard BOGGLES MY MIND. (Like, yes, sure, it's better that I should get an email notice for EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO REPLIES TO MY FRIEND'S POST instead of threading replies so I just get my FRIEND'S response to me ::headdesk::)

One of the best things about the internet in general, I always thought was people's ability to just create their own virtual world. To make their own places that were uniqutely THEM. And that's what everyone used to do, and now most of the popular sights have slowly restricted these abilities until we all look the same....*sigh*...WHY?!?!????

I understand your average person not wanting to bother to learn tricky customizations or hand-coding, but a nice little gallery of pre-done themes to choose from? How is that possibly a bad thing?

The point for me, is that with my visual perceptive disorders, my only hope of reading my flist (or anything else) is being able to customize my background and font colors and my fonts. If they take away my customized friends page, I just won't be able to read the entries anymore. And that will make me very sad. Because, like you, despite the echoes now appearing in the halls, I refuse to leave LJ. It's home, and it's just BETTER.:)

*offers you some tea since we will be settled in here together*

I hate facebook (i only use it to follow certain companies that only make their updates available through facebook) and tumblr dashboard is terribly impersonal. i always loved livejournal because of the control you had over things looked. it was always a hobby writing layouts for people - and a great way to test my css skills. i feel like i'm standing in a room and lj is busy painting me into a corner.

i really feel for people like you who have physical trouble looking at the new screens! also i don't know if you've noticed but they don't work on android phones anymore FAIL! and the lovely short cut that allowed you to go CTRL+B (or I or U) for bold, italic and underline text no longer works!!! back to typing code by hand. FAIL!!!!!

You and me both. I'm getting sick of this place. I'd move permanently, but everyone I know is still here...

and - not to mention the effort that has gone into our journals over the years. it sounds silly but it's like our home.

Yes, that too - especially our RP accounts. I think we could transfer stuff over but I don't know if I want to go through all of that. LJ is still active in the comms I'm in and a lot of them don't have DW accounts - just LJ.

a great example about how to change code is fanfiction.net - they listen to feed back and work quickly to fix any unexpected bugs in their interface, apologise profusely and do their best to make sure that everything is still workable.

lj just - well silence is the most common thing you hear back from them.

messing with how our journal displays is really something that annoys me. i mean, sure they changed the profile page but i only glance at that from time to time. they've made a mess of our post page but i don't have to stare at it for large periods of time. CHANGING THE FLIST - well that's what i look at all the time.
