Sanctuary Episode Reviews

I wish they'd stuck with the working title. I know 'resistance' makes more sense but seriously - department of tesla affairs? yes please!

First off, plot wise - I'm pretty certain the only reason that the government knew that Tesla was alive and available for hiring was because of Henry's little slip up to that government girl in the ep before hand when he was talking tech. Until that point, they didn't officially know that he existed - the Cabal, yes - but we have no evidence to show any information sharing between the Cabal and the government. So in a way, this whole mess is Henry's fault... sort of. :)

A Plot - reasons why I love it... First of all, Tesla isn't doing anything particularly evil, indeed, he is back to his historical roots and ambitions. it was the real Tesla's life goal to develop clean, free and self replicating energy - not to make a profit but for the good of the human population. He believed that with it he could put an end to the suffering of the less fortunate and break the monopoly that the utility companies like Edison had on the world. Unfortunately it is near impossible to fund such a venture. Who would want to back an investment that costs a fortune designed specifically NOT to make money? No one. It is like the advent of electric cars and their relationship with with petrol companies. Why do you think we have hybrids? Because we need them? No. Because the petrol companies don't want to go out of business. It's kind of political justice that Tesla Motors has a proper electric car... OFF TRACK.

SO - when the government offered him a blank cheque - what's a vampire to do? Take it of course, and steal most of it for his own purposes which just so happen to be rather noble despite the unforseen beastie preying on his staff. Totally not his fault.

I'd really like to know what sort of a role Tesla has in the rest of this facility - how much control over it he has. He's declared he is not and will not experiment on Abnormals, but others in the organisation are. He's sharing all the secrets he can with Helen, but there are still weapons shipments moving around the country with the purpose of killing Abnormals from Hollow Earth. This makes me think that Tesla is one of those side projects in the network rather than its overlord. He's an overpaid research branch and I just hope the goverment isn't too upset with him when they find out what he's been up to with their money. Modern day Robin Hood? Sort of - in his own way. I have a feeling that if we have a season five, Nikola's going to end up a test subject of the government and be in need of rescuing. Again. He just needs a badge that says, 'kitten in trouble'.

Emotinally, both he and Helen did a bit of growing up. Tesla, mostly thanks to Henry, was forced to admit to himself that Helen really was his best friend - possibly more, and that the things he gets up to affect her. When she yelled at him after Henry was taken, he seemed to finally get it. Helen for the second time displayed jealousy. That little, 'Nikky' line she threw in was something she wasn't proud of - and Nikola knew he deserved it. It's kind of a double standard I guess. Helen has slept with a lot of things through the years, Nikola - I'm not convinced he's slept with anything so when he dabbles, Helen goes green... :) All the same, she's learning that Nikola isn't essentially bad and not all his schemes are to do with world domination. Here, he was simply a scientist that had bitten off more than he could chew. Remind you of 1888?

B Story: I just - I don't know why they are necessary. I know you have a whole cast but if they don't belong in the story then don't put them in the story - use those extra 15minutes to add meat to the main story OR work them into your A story. I was watching old stargate today and noticed that they rarely had B-stories - that format only started much later - frankly when the quality went downhill. In my opnion, B stories have to justify their existence - as it was this is like the hundreth one I've fastforwarded through. Also, it was irritating. Irritating and pointless.

In summary, I loved where the episode left us with the evil organisation, infiltrated by our favourite vampire. It's like the Cabal but more awesome and with a Sancutary insider. I hope they explore this and use it in the future because it has a lot of potential.

Hollow Earth - I'm yet to find this plot line interesting. It's not the principle that bothers me, it's the poor way that it has been executed throughout the series. It just needs - a lot more.

Angry Birds? Oh yes, I loved them. Hopefully we'll be seeing them again because they were just adorable in a really annoying fashion - and you really did feel for them. My on question on their story line was - were those 'orphans' their chicks? LOL I think they might have been... :)

Indeed, their entire story line just kept getting better and better because, like the Sanctuary, you wanted to think the worst of them but you knew that there was something more to what they were up to - well played and well done.

Biggy shuddering at that woman keeping a lock of his fur was also priceless. I didn't catch the name of the type of Abnormal that's hot on him though. Perhpas we'll get a sneak look later? LOL

The B story. Again, seriously - so very pointless.

I love the concept of the Sanctuaries around the world struggling due to what Helen did - especially ones in unstable political situations BUT WHY WAS THIS NOT THE FOCUS??? Instead we got (frankly boring) character development that could (and should) have been summarised in a few short sentences like, 'my dad used to gamble all our money away after mum died - so yeah, life was tough'). Honestly, that would have been less annoying. I was hoping that we'd get to see a sanctuary being trashed by wandering gangs and Abnormals having nowhere to flee - falling into the hands of the black market - that would have put into question the validy of what Helen did. No such luck. Instead, Will's on his back being usless dreaming of his poor little life. We didn't even get to see anything more on his mother and the abnormal that took her. Such wasted opportunity and worst of all it was boring.

Magnus and Nikola Tesla become trapped in a virtual Sanctuary world at the mercy of the evil avatar of Adam Worth.

EXCITED by this. There is just so much you can get away with in a virtual world (which is very lol considering sanctuary IS a virtual world anyway). I just hope that the writers go hell for leather on this and throw everything at us. Danger, romance, action and abnormals - there is just so much that you can do with it. Indeed, i think i'm going to be forced to write fic because JUST EPIC.

Anything you want to see happen in this ep?

Goes without saying, no B PLOT PLEASE!

Ah that's right - do you remember what type of abnormal the bird said Cecile was? I'm all curious now - she could be hysterical and stalkerish LOL

Yeah B stories... They only work if A they've very amusing with good actors or B crucial to another plot. As a teacher once said to me, 'don't waste your words' and so many of these B stories were just there as fillers...

Oh yes! Bickerson's returning. They were adorable and - not annoying. Not really :D They're like those birds that wake you up REALLY EARLY in the morning and when you go to look at them they're all pretty and adorable.

Henry/Helen stuff is so cute this season! it reminds me of season one and totally makes sense. Gods i hope we get PUPPIES when He's girlfriend has babies.

Grandma Magnus... I just KNOW Tesla's going to bring that up - and get shot or slapped.

I agree with all the things you've pointed out about the last two episodes, especially that the B stories need to be related better to the A stories if they are going to keep them up.
However what I really wanted to say was that I share you're excitement about Chimera, not only does the tag line sound brilliant but SanctuarySeries on Twitter (slight spoilers) said that the episode is supposed to contain mind games, which I think is a fantastic way of exploring the relationship between Tesla and Magnus, they're always at their best when working with real challenges.
Besides the fact that we never really saw enough scenes with Adam and the Five in current day situations.
I personally hope that we get a little more insight into how overly curious both Magnus and Tesla are, and perhaps even little snippets of back-story would be great too.

Oh yes - this episode could be so brilliant! i really hope they push the mind games as much as possible - it would be so much fun. I think your icon sums it up! :D

*wonders when we'll get some kind of snippit*

Not next week - three weeks *hides in a corner* sorry lol i'm just overly excited about the slight spoilers they released :D

Lol that B story with Will and Henry worked because it was totally advancing plot and - you know - actually interesting. It felt like they spent more than two minutes working it out.

I liked the opening ep of this year - that totally didn't have a B plot and it worked epically :D

Not a fan of the B stories either.

Hey at least the last episode didn't have one - so much better. It proves you don't need to have ALL of the title cast in each episode :D

I was watching old stargate today and noticed that they rarely had B-stories - that format only started much later - frankly when the quality went downhill.

Oh, hey, that's true. I haven't watched it in ages, really, but I remember that much. It's very true, and I think that works very well. I'd rather have one full story than two shorter ones. Focus on making the main story better!

The fact that Sanctuary's B-plots have been so... pointless, like you say, if not boring, isn't exactly helping either.

I agree with the rest you said.

If they're going to do a B-story - it should be like - an ongoing important-to-the-whole-season B story. :D That I would kind of be okay with :D

I confess, whenever Tesla's on screen its quality leaps. He's getting more epic and JY - more dashing. damn him.

Last week's ep is worth a look - more like Old Sanctuary in that it's a monster/mystery/suspense thing with no evil B plot. Also I got your email! Shall get back to you shortly :D

Ya know....that kiss we got a spoiler of between Helen and Nikola did happen in front of a green screen. If Chimera is set mostly in a virtual world...maybe this is the ep we've been waiting for.
ellymelly: abnw: intrigueellymelly on November 23rd, 2011 08:29 pm (UTC)
Sady no - that's definitely from the season final LOL so we have to wait ages and AGES FOR IT. Although... she's not just going to randomly kiss him so maybe there'll be a bit of a build up to it in Chimera :D
death_ofmedeath_ofme on November 23rd, 2011 08:55 pm (UTC)

Well, at least they'll still have to definitely address that "Nikki" comment...and that redhead....hmmmmm.....

Hey.... at least there's a whole ep with them together. surely there must be SOMETHING.
