Because Australians can do whatever they want :D lol

A popular replacement for Atheist during the 2001 Australian Census was "Jedi" (see also Jedi census phenomenon).

*insert evil laugh*

Also, I can't WAIT for this. hot damn. *swoons over mcavoy*

lol!

i was just surprized by the sheer volume we had here - it outranked a lot of other major religions. :D i did it in protest of religion in general but I'm sure we could convince the government that it was a real religion... (okay, so i just want a pet yoda)

I think there was a campaign to make it the number one religion on the senses here one year but I think it didn't work out something.. I don't remember what ended up being number one.

Ha! I heard about british "Jedis" a while ago but I just learned what a census is and that WE don´t have it. :-( No being "Jedi" for me...

lol, germany ...and apparently my parents and grandparents were resistant to the census (exactly the year I was born). It´s funny how I thought the Brits were a little crazy trying to make "Jedi" an official religion and never got the story behind it because I had never heard of such a thing as a census.

of course, i remebered your country of origin about as soon as i asked you lol *feels like an idiot*

apparantly the story goes, when our new census was annouced, they had included a religious questionaire section. Only the main religions were listed (and they left out things like humanism, atheism etc...) so in protest, a chain email started up instructing (or daring) australians to declare themselves 'jedi'. the reasons for doing so were listed as:

1. to protest the narrowmindedness of the religions listed.
2. to indicate that we would like atheism listed as an option considering it's the fasted growing movement in australia.
3. to annoy people. :D

they threatened us with fines, but there was no way they were going to seriously track all of us down... lol after our jedi success, other countries started picking it up.

i think most of us did it to annoy... lol the census is such a pain in the ass... i think i listed my nationality as 'cylon' (i can't remember how restrained i was at the time).

HAHA! Cylon is even better than Jedi, I´d like to hear that in the news, lol.Awesome, movements like these proof that a)disobedience can be sooo much fun and b) there´s always hope for a change, I mean how discriminating is it to assume veryone has a religion ?
