To the MS Explorer (aka, The Little Red Ship)

(last two photos by kwayera)

when we crossed the drake passage (where it sank) the captain told us it was the most dangerous water in the world. we thought he was sort of kidding because on both crossings, the water was like a flat lake. hence we nicknamed it, 'the drake lake'. it cost us $4000 for 10 days in Antarctica, but we were on the lower decks in the least expensive rooms. It didn't matter because we spent most of our time in the lounge room taking over the one brown couch of the 'library'. we ran enormous games of black jack which comprised of most of the guests on board the ship and every night we would wait up until 1:00am when the bar closed so that we could play scrabble with Costas, the barman. Even though english was not his first language, he always seemed to win. the best moment was without a doubt the first night on board where all the guests were sitting in the lounge room and myself, and a few friends from our school trip, began to draw on the enormous whiteboard behind. The captain came and sat in front of us and played the piano as everyone watched on. It was very surreal.

^^^this is our board. I drew the penguins on the right :D

It's a shame that it sank. :(

The last picture is beautiful. So mysterious - but I like foggy pictures in general.

It's odd to imagine the ship is now on the ground of the sea *sigh*

that was the odd thing about antarctica, one minute the ocean was a pastal grey with a soft layer of fog - twenty minutes later it's the deepest blue you can imagine, mimiced by the sky above. surreal is the only word i can think of.

As soon as I saw this on the National Geographic site, I thought of you. This is the same ship, no?

yep, same ship. the photos above are from my actual trip.

Must have been a beautiful trip. Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Love the drawings. Here is today's article from National Geographic.

Yes, I am a Nat'l Geo nut. ;)

Thank you for the article :D I'm collecting bits and pieces related to MS Explorer at the moment. I'm actually quite surprised by how upset i am by its demise. She was a ship, but she was also the place where i had some of the best times of my life. I still recommend venturing to the Antarctic - if possible on explorer's clone lol :D
